Character design 101
I've decided I want to add some form of identifying mark to my online avatar.  This is a thread for people to suggest ideas/markings for my character to have, since I'm totally uncertain what to have.  Just leave your idea in a comment.  Thanks.

I know you asked me about this earlier today but I wasn't really awake enough to answer. First things first, you need to ask yourself what kind of 'marks' you want. I think you said last night that you'd like to keep it natural but distinctive. That's going to make it kinda hard, but it's doable. For Lore's markings, I used natural grey-fox markings plus I followed the contour of her bone structure. I ended up with something that's still distinctly a fox, but unlike anything else.

I'd suggest first and formost looking up Hawk and Eagle "Logo" designs. May not hit the mark but logos are very simplistic and stylized drawings. They might give you ideas.

Here's some that I saw just by googling 'hawk logo'.

Clearly not a red tailed hawk, but you can see the stylized markings on the head.

Another very simple one.

<img src="http://www.sportslogos.net/images/Basketball/NBA/ATL_416.gif" You can see how they stylized some of the markings on the chest and wings with this one. After you can kind of see how artists dumb down logos to one to three colors, yet still manage distinctive markings, you might be able to find some Red Tailed Hawk art that would give something more specific and figure out what you need.

With avians, most common markings are plumage and feather accents. It depends on the species for what markings are normaly expressive. I it is also common for anthro avians to have a crest, even if their base species does not, as it makes one more unique and allows for more expression. My crest comes more from the lion heritage then the Eagle heritage for example.
